You've heard the saying: Democrats always become Republicans right before an election.
Quite literally, just this week, Kamala Harris stole President Trump's 'no tax on tips' policy, which has been a core point of his Agenda 47 platform.
But here in New Mexico, that trend is on full display with Democratic Representative Gabe Vasquez and Senator Martin Heinrich's sudden concern for the border crisis. This week, they both visited the Santa Teresa Port of Entry to cosplay as moderates before the November election.
Although now Vasquez and Heinrich, who are in very contested races, are humming a new tune and hoping you forget what they've done over the past few years, here's a little reminder of both of their records on the border:
Gabe Vasquez:
Completely ignored the border until it became the worst humanitarian and influx crisis in history.
Voted against the Secure the Border Act—the most comprehensive border bill in recent history that would actually shut down the border.
Voted against the End the Border Catastrophe Act, which was the second chance for Congress to pass a comprehensive border security bill that would actually close the border.
Voted against the Laken Riley Act, which would require illegal immigrants who have been charged with crimes in the U.S. to be taken into custody.
Voted against denouncing Biden-Harris immigration policies.
Voted again against denouncing the Biden administration’s open-borders policies
Voted against hiring more CBP agents and streamlining the asylum process.
Voted against deploying improved technology to the southern border.
Voted against ending catch and release.
Voted against removing Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Established ties with an extreme open borders group.
He praised Biden’s executive orders that began on day one to open up the border.
Said the border crisis is a “non-existent threat."
Called efforts to secure the border “ill-informed” and “in bad taste.”
Called to eliminate ICE, claiming it has “no regard for humanity.”
He repeatedly called the border wall "racist" and tweeted that he wanted to "tear it down."
Said the border wall was built by a “crooked, racist administration.”
Applauded Biden for halting construction on the wall.
Called border security a “racist, environmentally destructive, massive waste of money” and “a glorification of xenophobia.”
Voted yet again against strongly condemning the Biden Administration and its Border Czar, Kamala Harris’s, failure to secure the United States border.
Voted against prohibiting illegal immigrants from voting in local elections in D.C.
Voted against stopping illegal immigrants from voting in U.S. elections.
Voted against preventing non-U.S. citizens from being counted in the census apportionment to determine how many seats each state gets in Congress.
Visited the border to prove no illegal immigrants were crossing, only to witness multiple men crossing at that exact moment.
Martin Heinrich:
Heinrich voted against restarting the construction of barriers at the U.S. Southern border and repeatedly voted against funding for barriers.
Heinrich called barriers “offensive” and wasteful.”
Heinrich voted against funding to crack down on illegal fentanyl smuggling along the Southern border and voted against efforts to provide $300 million for U.S. Customs and Border Protection narcotic and opioid detection efforts.
In August 2022, Heinrich was the deciding vote to kill an amendment that would provide $500 million to ICE for narcotic and drug detection.
Heinrich twice voted against implementing the "Remain in Mexico" policy.
Heinrich voted twice against continuing Title 42, the program allowing immigration enforcement agencies to quickly expel illegal immigrants.
Heinrich has voted repeatedly against Kate’s Law, which would set mandatory minimum imprisonment for deported felons who illegally re-enter the United States.
Heinrich opposed the Laken Riley Act, legislation that would prohibit migrants who are “charged with, arrested for or convicted of burglary, theft, or larceny” from receiving “any immigration status of benefit.”
Heinrich has repeatedly voted against blocking funds from dangerous sanctuary cities and even praised sanctuary policies on Twitter.
The bottom line is that these Democratic politicians will say anything during an election year, but voters should look to their records before believing anything that comes out of their mouths.
New Mexicans don't have to question where their Republican challengers, Yvette Herrell, and Nella Domenici, stand when it comes to protecting our border. Securing the border and stopping this deadly disaster will be their first priority when in office.
